With larger-scale rocket motors comes larger ground support equipment and more headaches surrounding keeping the motor stationary. In the last year we have built a new test stand for these large motors. It already has proven itself on keeping a 6" Q motor anchored, even through a burn-through event.
The test stand is composed of three pieces: the base plate, main shaft, and shaft extension. These parts are all removable and are bolted together. The base is essentially a plate of thick steel to transfer the load to the ground evenly. The shaft is a birdcage of square steel tubing with reinforcing squares along the length. The extension is used for longer motors and is of the same design as the main shaft. Lastly, the top of the stand is adorned with u-bolts for guy wire attachment.
This test stand will be used to harness all upcoming large rocket motors.
