Solid Rocket Motors
We have been experimenting in the world of solids to determine which burn-rate catalyst is more effective: red iron oxide (Fe₂O₃) or copper chromite (Cu₂Cr₂O₅).

PropellantThe unmodified propellant that is used in this rocket motor is ammonium perchlorate composite propellant (APCP). Our fuel is hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) and our oxidizer (as stated in the name) is ammonium perchlorate (AP). We are using a diisocyanate (MDI to be specific) to cure the propellant from a viscous liquid into a rubbery solid.
Motor SpecificationsAll of the motor parts were ordered from Loki Research. This is a 38 mm motor that has a maximum total impulse of 240 N-s. It measures about 7 inches long and its standard propellant weight is 100 g. The grain configuration is a standard BATES grain: two 2 inch long grains with a diameter of 1.212 inches and a core diameter of 0.5 inch.
